Medically Reviewed and Edited by
Olga Kyrychenko, Psychologist

If you’re looking for an easy, quick and convenient way to find a licensed therapist, get a mental health consultation or book an online or in-office therapy session, with the option of same-day appointments, Zocdoc can be the solution.

Committed to simplifying healthcare access, Zocdoc is a platform designed to connect patients with qualified therapists, providing a vast and comprehensive database of professionals and treatment options. It allows you to search for in-network therapists by insurance provider, location, or availability and it offers the feature to easily schedule appointments with them.

My Zocdoc review will explain how to use the platform, and how to make the most out of it. My aim is also to provide you with the most accurate information and our honest opinion so that you can determine if Zocdoc is a valid alternative to other popular online therapy providers.

Zocdoc Therapy Rating Breakdown

Overall Rating

Overall Rating - 4 Stars

Zocdoc is a leading healthcare search tool that makes it easy to find a therapist who is licensed in your state and accepts your insurance. Their review system allows you to choose a therapist also based on other patient’s feedback. However, availability and insurance information aren’t always up to date.

Price

Price - 3 Stars

The price varies considerably based on location and therapist. Although Zocdoc is integrated with insurance plans, there’s no guarantee of finding a therapist covered by your insurance, making this platform not as convenient or affordable as some other mental health online providers.

Treatment Options

Treatment Options - 4.5 Stars

With its nationwide network of licensed providers, on Zocdoc you can find a wide range of psychologists and psychiatrists who offer different types of treatments and specializations. The only limitation is that not all of them are available for virtual sessions and they might not operate in your state.

App and Software

App and Software - 4.5 Stars

The site and the app are clean, intuitive, and easy to use. The only feature that needs improvement is their in-platform software for online sessions that doesn’t match other leading competitors. However, most therapists use an external platform like Zoom or Doximity.

Customer Service

Customer Service - 4 Stars

Zocdoc holds accreditation from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and has earned an A+ rating for its prompt response to consumer complaints. Their customer service is available (Monday – Friday from 8am-8pm EST, and weekends and holidays from 9am-6pm EST) and you can contact them by email or by phone.

Safety and Privacy

Safety and Privacy - 5 Stars

Zocdoc is definitively safe to use. It’s HIPAA compliant, it doesn’t sell your personal information to third parties and it regularly conducts HITRUST audits, obtaining Certified Status (CSF) for information security. They also have a cybersecurity rating “B”, which guarantees that your personal info is well protected.

Founded in 2007, Zocdoc is a private company located in New York City. It has more than 500 employees and according to PrivCo, it has a post-money valuation in the range of $1B to $10B. But in May 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the platform launched its telehealth service, developing a HIPAA-compliant video call service for virtual appointments.

Now, it offers both in-person and online medical appointments across a nationwide network of over 200 specialties and over 12k insurance plans. It’s also integrated with calendars with 150 EHRs (Electronic Health Records) and collaborates with over 60 leading health systems.

How Does Zocdoc Work

Zocdoc is not a healthcare provider, but rather a search tool that lets you browse providers in their nationwide marketplace. The advantage of this is that you can independently decide to select a therapist based on your unique needs and preferences.

Getting started with Zocdoc is very easy. You can sign up with an email address or use your existing login from Google, Facebook, or Apple. Once you’ve created an account, on “My Zocdoc” page, you have a panoramic view of your profile where you can manage your insurance plan information. You can also upload a picture of your insurance card, and the platform will automatically detect and fill in all your details.

After that, you can start searching for a provider who is in your insurance network. The research tool is very intuitive and efficient, as you can filter your selection using different criteria, like specific medical condition, physician specialty, location, availability, treatment approach, and modality (individual, couple or group therapy). You can further filter therapists based on your specific preferences, like age, gender, ethnicity, or even faith.

Once you have narrowed down your research, you can view the profile of each provider, where you can get all their detailed information, from their education and background, to appointment types and availability, prices and payment options.

But what makes Zocdoc stand out is its rating system: you can finalize your decision reading real experiences and opinions from previous patients, who leave trustworthy feedback on the overall experience, the waiting time and the bedside manner of the provider. However, it’s fair to mention that it has been reported that Zocdoc appears to selectively curate reviews to ensure they predominantly reflect a positive sentiment.

Based on our experience, it usually takes a day or less from the moment you sign up until you are matched with a therapist of your choice and can begin therapy.

How do Therapy Sessions work in Zocdoc?

When looking for therapy, you can either do a manual search by going through the list of providers based on your own filters, or you can choose to answer a few questions that will allow Zocdoc to automatically adjust your search based on your individual needs. This is a good option if you are new to therapy or you are not sure what treatment or specialist can better help you. In fact, Zocdoc, if necessary, will also refer you for an initial consultation with primary care providers who can direct you to the right mental health care.

Once you’ve chosen your preferred therapist, you can see the available slots in the provider’s calendar and easily book an appointment at the date and time that you prefer. With “ZocDoc Check-In”, you can fill out and submit all the necessary forms and paperwork the therapist requires before the appointment. This feature simplifies and accelerates the process, allowing you to even book same-day appointments.

After a successful booking, you will receive a confirmation email with all the details, including a link that allows you to reschedule or cancel the visit. Alternatively, you can easily do it on your Zocdoc account, where you can manage all your appointments and cancel them at any time, even last minute, with no charge. But please note that canceling or rescheduling too many appointments may result in your account being locked.

If you opted for online therapy, you will get instructions to access the visit in your confirmation email. Zocdoc has an in-platform software for video calls, however the majority of providers choose to use external platforms like Zoom or Doximity. The duration of each appointment varies from therapist, but they usually last 30 to 45 minutes.

You have to choose your location, then you will be presented with a list of relevant profiles you can browse. If you refresh the page, other profiles might appear. So if you see someone you like, open their profile in a new tab, while hitting the refresh button on the main page a couple of times still, to see what other profiles might show up.

You can read each therapist’s profile, see how they present themselves and whether or not you feel comfortable with them and what they offer. When you find someone you like, all you have to do is click the ‘Get started’ button and you will be prompted to pay and get the therapy rolling.

Zocdoc Therapy Price

Zocdoc is completely free for patients, granting full access to its vast provider database, booking system and help center. Cost for each consultation or visit, however, depends exclusively on specialist’s rates: education, qualifications, experience and location of the therapist significantly affects the price of the therapy. You can expect a cost per session that ranges from at least $100 up to $500.

You can use your insurance whether or not the therapist is in your insurance provider’s network. Make sure to look for a caption under each therapist’s photo that says “In Network”. If a therapist you’re interested in shows up as “Out of Network”, they cannot accept your health insurance. However, some providers have an “Out-of-Pocket Fees” section that shows the cost of a visit without insurance. Note that any payment is processed through the provider’s practice, not by Zocdoc, which means you won’t have to pay additional fees or hidden charges.

If you choose a therapist within your insurance provider’s network, there are different payment options the therapist’s practice can offer you, depending on their policy. They may ask you to pay upfront and they will handle your insurance claims on your behalf, ensuring you will receive direct reimbursement right after they file the claim.

Alternatively, still after an upfront payment, they will issue you itemized receipts, called superbills, which you can submit to your insurance to get a reimbursement. In any case, make sure to consult first with your insurance provider on this matter, in order to avoid undesirable out-of-pocket payments.
