The National Queer and Trans Therapist of Color Network (NQTTCN) is a therapist directory specifically designed to provide mental health care for queer and trans-Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (QTBIPOC), a community frequently faced with challenges in accessing supportive, affirming, and affordable care.

To respond to the increased state of burnout and depression within the community, NQTTCN is committed to closing the gap in health inequities by offering culturally sensitive services for QTBIPOC people provided by QTBIPOC therapists.

Our NQTTCN review aims to highlight the benefits of mental health care provided by therapists who are personally able to relate to the experiences and challenges of their patients. We will closely examine how the platform works, what specific services it offers, and how it’s integrated with insurance. By the end of this review, you will hopefully understand if NQTTCN is the right place for you to find therapy.

Is The National Queer & Trans Therapists of Color Network Legit?

Headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, NQTTCN was founded in 2016 with the goal of connecting QTPoC patients to mental health practitioners with whom they can identify. With a directory of more than 300 therapists operating in 30 states, NQTTCN has established a large community of resource-sharing, connection, learning, and care for QTPoC people.

It’s registered as a “501c3” non-profit organization, a status administered by the US Department of Treasury through the Internal Revenue Service. “501c3” organizations are highly regulated entities, which must not serve any private interests and their earnings must be used for charitable purposes only. NQTTCN does so through its Mental Health Fund, a program that offers financial support for up to 8 sessions with a psychotherapist.

The organization does not have a mobile app and there are no online reviews available, either on their website or on third-party platforms. However, given the strict “501c3” status and its inspiring commitment to healing justice, we can say that NQTTCN is living up to its values and mission, making it a trustworthy organization.

NQTTCN is currently only in available in the following 30 states: AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, DC, FL, GA, ID, IL, LA, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, NV, NJ, NY, NC, OH, OR, PA, RI, TN, TX, UT, VA and WA.

How Does NQTTCN Works

NQTTCN doesn’t provide a feature for in-platform appointment booking. Instead, it simply allows you to browse a wide range of therapists who practice in different settings, like agencies, community-based clinics, or private practices. So, once you’ve chosen your preferred therapist, to check availability and book an appointment, you have to deal with them independently. You can contact them by phone, leaving an email, and clicking an external link that will redirect you to their practice website.

Usually, sessions last 30 to 45 minutes, but ultimately the duration of appointments varies from therapist and treatment methodology. Because of the variety of therapists, on NQTTCN you can find a wide array of therapeutic approaches, like cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, or trauma-focused therapy, implemented **by a variety of treatments, including individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy, or psychiatry.

NQTTCN also provides free mental health and community resources to help you get additional support. These resources are links to affiliated QTBIPoC and BIPoC organizations aligned with healing justice and a culturally sensitive approach to mental health. Among suggesting additional therapist directories that focus on specific groups and minorities like Latinx, Black Girls, or Muslims, it also provides a list of peer support spaces, including:

Fireweed Collective:

A support network and education project that provides weekly online support groups for people who experience the world in ways that are often diagnosed as mental illness.

Rest for Resistance:

An online support group for queer and trans people of color

Beam community:

An emotional and mental health collective dedicated to the healing, wellness, and liberation of Black and marginalized communities, that offers virtual peer support spaces that center on Black mental health & healing.

Project LETS:

A national organization and movement led by and for people with lived experience of mental illness/madness, Disability, trauma, & neurodivergence, that offers peer support services and community education & speaking.

NQTTCN Therapy Price

NQTTCN is a completely free service, granting access to one of the larger directories specifically geared toward the LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities. The cost for each visit, however, depends exclusively on the specialist’s rates: education, qualifications, experience, and location of the therapist affect the price of the therapy. Generally, you can expect a cost per session that ranges from $100 up to $200 for individual therapy, $250-$275 for couple therapy, and $55-$85 for group therapy.

Although you will find that some therapists don’t accept insurance, most of them are in network with major insurance companies, like Aetna, Cigna, United Health Care, Oscar Health, or Oxford, making NQTTCN a good choice compared to other therapy providers like Pride Counseling, that doesn’t accept insurance at all.

Moreover, because of the financial support offered by their Mental Health Fund, NQTTCN remains a valid choice even compared to leading competitors like Talkspace: while it accepts some insurance plans as well, it doesn’t offer any sliding scale or financial assistance as NQTTCN does.

During the initial signup questionnaire, you can specify if you are currently unemployed or facing any type of financial difficulties. When the payment screen pops up, there will be a link on it saying ‘Apply for financial aid’ – you can click it to find out if you are eligible for their program or not. You’ll be asked a few questions and offered discounts based on the information you provide – with the largest discount being 40% off the original price.

NQTTCN Review - Frequently Asked Questions

What is NQTTCN?

NQTTCN operates as a therapist directory catering to the mental health needs of queer and trans-Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (QTBIPoC) communities. Therapy seekers can use the free search tool to find licensed mental health practitioners, independently selecting therapists based on preferences and needs.

Is NQTTCN safe?

Yes, NQTTCN is a legitimate non-profit organization, founded in 2016 and headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland. Adhering to "501c3" status, it prioritizes healing justice, and safety, and its services don’t require user profiles or personal information.

How much does NQTTCN cost?

Using NQTTCN's discovery tool is free. Therapy costs vary, ranging from $100 to $200 per session, with options for insurance coverage and financial support.

How long does it take to find a therapist and book an appointment?

Finding a therapist on NQTTCN may take some time, and users need to contact therapists independently for appointments. Response times depend on therapists' availability.

Does NQTTCN offer virtual therapy sessions?

Yes, the majority of practitioners on NQTTCN provide virtual therapy sessions. However, not all of them may operate in your state, so it's essential to carefully filter your search.

What mental health conditions does NQTTCN treat?

Having an extensive database of licensed therapists, on NQTTCN you can potentially find a specialist for any mental health concern within the QTBIPoC community.

Is NQTTCN Therapy Right Gor Me?

NQTTCN is a non-profit organization that aims to create new community-led systems of care for LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities, in an effort to respond to generational trauma, facilitate collective healing, and transform systemic oppression. It provides supportive services through initiatives such as resource/skill sharing, training, and a free discovery tool.

With the largest selection of QTBIPoC therapists, the discovery tools help make health care more accessible and affordable, allowing you to find a therapist based on your needs and preferences. Because it’s a traditional directory and it doesn’t provide very specific filters to narrow down your research, it does require a bit more work on your end to find the right therapist. Moreover, it covers only 30 states, so your odds of finding a therapist will depend mainly on your location.

On NQTTCN you can find a wide range of online therapy services, that include individual therapy, couples therapy, family therapy, and psychiatry. The majority of therapists accept insurance plans or sliding-scale rates, like the Mental Heath Fund offered by NQTTCN, which provides financial support for up to 8 sessions with a psychotherapist for BIPOC people in need.

In conclusion, NQTTCN is a valuable resource for LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities, providing services aimed specifically at therapy seekers that other online therapy platforms do not prioritize.
